In a significant effort to understand the energy companies operating in the north-east of Scotland, the Scottish Affairs Select Committee visited the Kincardine Offshore Windfarm Limited (KOWL) and Flotation Energy. This visit aimed to gain insights into the operational contributions of these renewable energy entities, marking a step forward in the UK’s green energy agenda.
The Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm is a floating wind farm located 15 kilometers off the coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. With a substantial capacity of 50 MW, it has been supplying green electricity to the UK grid since becoming fully operational in 2021 under the ownership of Dragados. This project represents an important advancement in Scotland’s renewable energy sector and is a key element in the country’s green transition.
On November 26, 2024, ten Committee members were briefed on the technological breakthroughs and achievements of KOWL. Notable among these advancements is a new repair method enabling significant on-site repairs, eliminating the necessity for expensive and time-consuming tow-to-port operations. This represents a major leap in efficiency and practicality for offshore wind farms.
The Committee’s interaction with Flotation Energy and their joint venture partner, Vårgrønn, introduced them to the Green Volt Development. This 560 MW offshore wind project, located off the east coast of Scotland, highlights ongoing efforts to expand Scotland’s renewable energy generation capacity and reduce carbon emissions.
