Cadeler Completes Final Turbine Installation at Borkum Riffgrund 3 Wind Park

January 16, 2025

Cadeler has reached a significant milestone by completing the final wind turbine installation at the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind park. This achievement marks the culmination of extensive work involving the installation of 83 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each boasting a capacity of 11 MW. Utilizing the vessel Wind Osprey, the project now contributes a substantial 913 MW to Germany’s renewable energy portfolio. The installation began in June 2024 and is projected to be finalized in 2025, highlighting the efficiency and dedication of the teams involved.

Owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure, the BKR 3 project is a testament to successful strategic planning and investment in renewable energy. Ørsted secured the project following successful bids in 2017 and 2018 auctions at €0/MWh, illustrating the competitive nature of the renewable energy sector. The Borkum Riffgrund 3, in tandem with the nearby Gode Wind 3, aims to generate a combined total of 1.1 GW. This output is sufficient to supply power to over a million German households, a significant contribution to the country’s energy needs.

By the end of 2023, Germany had nearly 66 GW of wind capacity, with 8.4 GW coming from offshore installations. The country’s ambitious targets seek to expand offshore wind capacity to 30 GW by 2030, 40 GW by 2035, and at least 70 GW by 2045. This project is a prime example of Germany’s commitment to expanding renewable energy to sustainably meet future demands. With these advancements, Germany is well on its way to achieving its long-term energy goals, reinforcing the importance of renewable energy in addressing the global energy crisis.
