Breaking New Ground in Maritime Sustainability
MAN Energy Solutions has announced its plans to deliver the first ammonia-fueled engine, which will be installed on a vessel in Japan. This aligns with ongoing efforts in the maritime sector to find sustainable energy sources, as shipping is responsible for about 3% of global CO2 emissions, despite accounting for 90% of world trade. Ammonia for these engines can be produced from fossil fuels or renewable sources like wind or solar energy. When generated from renewable sources, ammonia can achieve a net carbon footprint close to zero, offering a significant reduction in harmful emissions.
Building the Future
The construction and trial phases for this first-of-its-kind ship are expected to take approximately two years. Developing new safety procedures and fuel supply logistics will be crucial due to ammonia’s toxic nature and the complexities involved in its handling. Coordinating with international port authorities will also be essential to develop the infrastructure needed for ammonia bunkering, ensuring safety during the refueling process.
Retrofitting the Existing Fleet
