January 24, 2025

Zain Group has positioned itself as a formidable force in the Middle East and Africa by setting and committing to ambitious climate targets, which push the boundaries of what has long been the norm in the region. As the first Kuwaiti company to secure validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for their emission reduction goals, Zain stands out by ensuring science-based strategies are at the heart of its environmental efforts. These targets aim for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across their value chain by 2050. In the shorter term, the company has committed to cutting Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2020 baseline and aims for an eventual 90% reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2050, evidencing their long-term vision and commitment to substantial change.

Commitment to Climate Change

In 2022, Zain Group demonstrated its commitment to addressing climate change by developing a thorough Climate Change Compliance Framework. This framework serves as both a guide and structure for all their climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives. With the formal submission of their targets to the SBTi, Zain underscored its seriousness in adhering to global best practices. Their strategy includes the highest level of oversight with Board-level engagement, ensuring that accountability and responsibility trickle down through the company. Practical steps in their plan involve reducing energy consumption, shifting towards renewable energy sources, and introducing carbon dioxide removal solutions wherever feasible. These initiatives underline a clear intent to operationalize their ambitious climate targets comprehensively.

Leadership in Corporate Sustainability

Zain has been consistently recognized for its proactive climate actions, achieving an A- score from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for three years in a row. This accolade establishes Zain as the top telecom operator in the Middle East and Africa in terms of climate action and sustainability. Such recognition underscores the company’s dedication to leading through transparent and effective environmental strategies. Zain’s method includes a clear plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring they help prevent serious climate change consequences while securing sustainable business growth. Their efforts set a benchmark for other companies in the region, demonstrating what can be achieved with a determined and strategic approach and encouraging others to follow.

By 2050, Zain Group aims to be a leading climate action example in the Middle East. By setting science-based targets and achieving key interim goals, Zain demonstrates the potential for large corporations to lead meaningful sustainability efforts. By then, their initiatives will have produced tangible results, cementing Zain’s position as a pioneer in corporate environmental responsibility in the region.
