How Will Newcleo and Slovak Firms Advance Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors?

January 17, 2025

In a significant move to push the boundaries of nuclear innovation, Newcleo, a leading nuclear project developer, has signed strategic agreements with Slovakian nuclear companies JAVYS and VUJE. The goal of these partnerships is to bolster the development and implementation of Lead-Cooled Fast Reactor (LFR) technology within Slovakia. The collaboration not only highlights the potential of LFR technology to revolutionize nuclear energy but also underscores Slovakia’s commitment to advancing its nuclear capabilities.

The first framework agreement between Newcleo and VUJE establishes comprehensive technical and commercial cooperation. This relationship is aimed at streamlining the development of LFR technology while ensuring its seamless implementation in Slovakia. VUJE’s extensive expertise in nuclear technology will play a crucial role in driving innovation and ensuring the project’s success. This partnership is expected to facilitate a knowledge exchange that accelerates the practical deployment of advanced nuclear reactors in the region, marking a significant milestone in Slovakia’s nuclear energy landscape.

Complementing this partnership is Newcleo’s second agreement with state-owned JAVYS, which has led to the creation of a joint venture named the “Centre for Development of Spent Nuclear Fuel Utilisation” or CVP. JAVYS holds a 51% stake in the venture, while Newcleo holds the remaining 49%. This joint endeavor aims to develop and construct an Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) power plant at the Jaslovske Bohunice V1 site, potentially featuring up to four LFR-AS-200 reactors. The establishment of CVP signifies a collaborative effort to manage and utilize spent nuclear fuel more efficiently, aiming for a long-term solution through multi-recycling, thereby contributing to a closed fuel cycle.

Newcleo’s collaboration with VUJE is also set to extend to the joint venture’s initial feasibility studies and subsequent activities. This involvement ensures that technical evaluations and project planning are carried out with precision and expertise. By connecting the dots between LFR technology’s theoretical viability and its practical application, this multilayered partnership exemplifies a proactive approach to modern nuclear challenges. Through these strategic partnerships, Newcleo and its Slovakian partners are not only advancing the state of nuclear technology but also setting a precedent for future international collaborations in the field.

Together, these initiatives reaffirm the potential of LFR technology in providing a sustainable and efficient nuclear energy solution. Although these agreements have laid a strong foundation, the path forward involves numerous technical challenges and developmental milestones. The collaboration between Newcleo, JAVYS, and VUJE brings together a wealth of knowledge and resources, setting an optimistic tone for the future of nuclear energy development in Europe.
