Poland’s government has embarked on an ambitious renewable energy project, constructing the Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm, which is set to become one of the largest wind farms in the world. With a planned capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) and a significant investment of 30 billion złotys (approximately 7.14 billion euros), this marks the most monumental renewable energy initiative in Poland’s history. Prime Minister Donald Tusk underscored the pioneering nature of the project, which sets new benchmarks for wind energy through the use of the largest turbines available globally.
Spanning an extensive area of 190 square kilometers in the Baltic Sea and situated 40 kilometers from the Polish coast, the wind farm will boast 107 turbines, each with a capacity of 14 megawatts (MW). The initiative is spearheaded by the Polish Energy Group (PGE) in collaboration with the Danish company Ørsted. Energy production is anticipated to commence by mid-2027, aiming for full completion in the latter half of that year. Prime Minister Tusk also highlighted Poland’s long-term vision for offshore wind energy, projecting an offshore capacity of 18 GW by 2040, which is equivalent to the combined output of four nuclear power plants.
