A significant stride was made in the advancement of floating offshore wind technology in South Korea when Haewoori Offshore Wind, a company established in 2022 by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Copenhagen Offshore Partners, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute and Ulsan Technopark. The new MoU aims to not only enhance the technological aspects of floating offshore wind power but also foster workforce development, ultimately supporting the local economy in Ulsan and boosting the offshore wind industry.
The collaboration between these key organizations is poised to advance several critical areas, including the operation and maintenance of large-scale power generation facilities, technological innovations, and the nurturing of talent within the sector. One of the most ambitious goals of this agreement is the development of the 1.5 GW Haewoori floating wind farm, set to be constructed approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Ulsan. This colossal project, having secured the necessary Electric Business Licenses for all its phases, also includes a contract for the production, transportation, and installation of its floating foundation.
Additionally, to ensure the smooth transmission of the generated power, Haewoori Offshore Wind signed a Transmission Service Agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation in October. This agreement represents a collective effort to advance the offshore wind sector, underscoring the dedication not only to innovate and remain at the forefront of the industry but also to revitalize local industries and provide sustainable economic benefits to the region.
The emphasis on Ulsan’s local economy and workforce development is noteworthy. By focusing on training and nurturing talent, the partnership aims to create job opportunities and equip the workforce with the skills needed to excel in an evolving energy landscape. This strategy ensures that the growth of the floating offshore wind sector will be paired with the economic prosperity of the local community, thus laying a strong foundation for sustainable development in the region.
The memorandum of understanding thus acts as a cornerstone for a multi-faceted strategy to advance floating offshore wind technology in South Korea. By tapping into local resources, fostering innovation, and ensuring a skilled workforce, the collaboration between Haewoori Offshore Wind and its partners marks a transformative step forward for South Korea’s energy future.
