In a significant move towards expanding its renewable energy portfolio, France has introduced detailed specifications for two ambitious offshore wind tenders, AO7 and AO8, designed to develop a total of 2.5 GW of wind power off the French coast. The announcement by the Commission de Régulation de l’Energie (CRE) underscores the nation’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The AO7 tender revolves around the Ile d’Oléron wind project, poised to generate between 900 to 1,200 MW of energy and is positioned over 35 kilometers from the island’s coast. On the other hand, the AO8 tender focuses on the Centre Manche 2 wind project, aiming to deliver between 1,400 to 1,600 MW and is situated 40 to 50 kilometers east of the Manche department.
The recently released specifications lay out the procedures that nine pre-selected companies need to follow, with notable contenders being Ocean Winds, Groupement Energies du Méridien, and EDF Renouvelables. These pre-selected companies are expected to adhere to a structured bidding process, which culminates on April 2, 2025, marking a crucial deadline for all submissions. This meticulous approach ensures that the tenders are awarded transparently and effectively, thereby attracting the best expertise and technology for these large-scale projects. France’s strategic ambition is to reach 18 GW of offshore wind capacity by the year 2035, with plans to allocate 8 to 10 GW through tenders by 2026.
