In a significant move towards sustainable urban development, Oil India has partnered with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to set up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Bhubaneswar. This initiative aims to address the city’s growing waste management challenges while generating renewable energy. The facility is designed to process an impressive 200 tons per day (tpd) of segregated municipal solid waste, initially producing 10 to 15 tpd of biomethane. With an investment of Rs 150 crore, the collaboration seeks not only to reduce waste but also to contribute to clean energy solutions.
The CBG plant will serve multiple purposes, including providing fuel for transportation and other sectors. Additionally, the by-product, compost, will be highly beneficial for agricultural activities. The establishment of this plant marks a promising step in Bhubaneswar’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future. The plant’s capacity has the potential for expansion to 300 tpd, further boosting its environmental benefits. This ambitious project comes with a two-year timeline for completion, and construction is already underway.
Beyond this initial project, Oil India has shown a commitment to support the larger vision of sustainable waste management across the state. The company pledged to assist the Odisha government in setting up similar CBG plants in seven other locations, including Puri, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Rourkela. Each of these plants will play a critical role in transforming urban waste into valuable resources, aligning with global environmental goals. The initiative underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing urban challenges and creating a cleaner living environment for residents.
