Dumfries and Galloway Review Wind Energy Guidelines for Taller Turbines

November 15, 2024

In response to the growing interest in taller wind turbines, Dumfries and Galloway Council is revising its guidelines for assessing onshore wind farm developments, reflecting advancements in wind energy technology and the shift toward more efficient renewable energy production. The council has observed an increase in applications for turbines over 150 meters, necessitating an update to their assessment criteria. Councillor Gail Macgregor emphasized the need to align with these changes while balancing the goals of renewable energy with the preservation of the landscape.

Several factors are driving the need for these updated guidelines, including landscape changes from ongoing wind farm developments, updates to NatureScot’s landscape study guidelines, and the adoption of the National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4). The council acknowledges that the potential for further turbine development in some areas is increasingly limited by cumulative effects. As a result, the revised guidelines will help identify areas where opportunities for development are restricted and highlight areas with potential for varying scales of development.

The council is actively encouraging public participation in the consultation process, inviting local residents, environmental groups, and industry stakeholders to provide their input on the proposed changes. This feedback is vital in shaping the approach of Dumfries and Galloway to wind energy development. The consultation period concludes on December 20, after which the council will review the feedback and finalize the new assessment criteria.

Ultimately, this initiative aims to support Scotland’s renewable energy strategy while maintaining the natural beauty of the region. The revisited guidelines will ensure that future wind energy projects are developed responsibly, reflecting both technological advancements and the community’s values. By balancing progress with preservation, Dumfries and Galloway Council seeks to contribute to a sustainable future.
