Hindustan Zinc Limited has embarked on an ambitious path to enhance its environmental sustainability by setting a target to derive over 70% of its total power requirements from renewable sources by 2027. With this strategic move, the company aims to significantly reduce its carbon emissions and energy consumption. In the fiscal year 2024, Hindustan Zinc achieved remarkable energy conservation, amounting to over 0.8 million Gigajoule (GJ), which is equivalent to the annual energy required to power approximately 70,000 homes. This impressive achievement was made possible through substantial reinvestments, improvements in infrastructure, and a transition from conventional fuels to cleaner alternatives like piped natural gas.
The company’s shift from traditional energy sources to more sustainable options has not only helped diminish its carbon footprint but has also led to a 14% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity as compared to 2020 levels. Notably, this reduction was realized despite an increase in production volumes. Hindustan Zinc has implemented various innovative energy efficiency projects to support its sustainability goals. These initiatives include revamping turbines at its captive power plants, enhancing cellhouse efficiencies, installing variable frequency drives, and transitioning to piped natural gas as a cleaner fuel alternative to diesel.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, the Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, highlighted the company’s robust commitment to its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap, which includes the development of up to 530 megawatts (MW) of renewable power generation capacity. This ambitious plan is part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or even sooner. The company has already received notable recognition for its sustainability efforts, being the first Indian firm in the metals and mining sector to attain validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative. This validation aligns Hindustan Zinc’s commitments with the global 1.5°C warming threshold. Furthermore, the company’s product portfolio is Environment Product Declaration (EPD) verified, and it has been honored with a Leadership Band (A-) designation by the Carbon Disclosure Project for its exceptional achievements in water security and climate change mitigation.
Ultimately, Hindustan Zinc’s comprehensive efforts signify a strategic pivot towards sustainability and energy efficiency. These endeavors are underpinned by significant investments and the implementation of innovative projects designed to minimize the environmental impact of the company’s operations. The commitment to incorporating renewable energy sources and executing energy-efficient measures underscores Hindustan Zinc’s dedication to building a more sustainable future for the industry and the planet.
