How Is Iraq Enhancing Its Energy System With GE Vernova’s Support?

February 28, 2025

In recent years, Iraq has faced significant challenges in meeting its growing energy demands, particularly during peak periods when energy needs surge. The country’s Ministry of Electricity (MoE) is actively working to modernize and enhance its power generation infrastructure to address these pressing issues. A key player in these efforts is GE Vernova Inc., which has been providing crucial support to Iraq’s electricity sector. Through a series of modifications and upgrades at vital power facilities, GE Vernova has significantly improved both the production and performance of existing power units, ensuring more reliable energy delivery across the nation.

Strategic Upgrades and Partnerships

One of the central strategies employed by Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity involves forging meaningful partnerships with international companies, such as GE Vernova. Ziyad Ali Fadhil, Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, has emphasized the importance of these collaborations in driving Iraq’s energy transformation goals. By leveraging GE Vernova’s advanced technologies and expertise, Iraq aims to bolster its power generation capacity by an additional 500 megawatts (MW) by the summer of 2025. This enhancement will be achieved through upgrading 46 gas turbines located across 12 power stations, providing a much-needed boost to the national grid.

Some of the critical power plants, including those in Ninawa, Al Diwaniyah, and Karbala, have already initiated a transition from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to natural gas, resulting in an impressive capacity increase of about 260 MW. This shift not only boosts the efficiency of these power plants but also reduces fuel consumption and lowers carbon emissions. These improvements underline Iraq’s commitment to adopting cleaner energy sources, aligning with global sustainability goals. Further capacity increases of around 250 MW are anticipated from the remaining plants by summer 2025, which will further enhance Iraq’s energy infrastructure.

Long-Term Impact and Future Prospects

By improving the efficiency and capacity of Iraq’s power infrastructure, GE Vernova is helping to ensure that the country can meet its present and future energy needs. These improvements are vital for fostering economic development, enhancing the quality of life for citizens, and ensuring a stable and dependable power supply for the entire country.
