Australian Vanadium Limited (AVL) has taken a bold step toward revolutionizing the energy storage market with the initiation of the design phase for Project Lumina, a modular, scalable, and turnkey vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage system. This ambitious project, led by its subsidiary, VSUN Energy, aims to develop a cost-competitive utility-scale 100 MW VFB Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capable of providing storage durations of both four hours and eight hours. The primary objective is not only to create a robust market for AVL’s vanadium oxide production but also to offer a storage solution with an impressive cost of $166 per megawatt-hour (MWh).

As the renewable energy sector continues to grow, the need for efficient and reliable energy storage solutions becomes increasingly critical. Traditional battery technologies, such as lithium-ion, face challenges related to scalability, cost, and environmental impact. AVL’s vanadium flow batteries, distinguished by their ability to store and release large amounts of energy over extended periods, present an attractive alternative.
