United Airlines Partners With Twelve for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

United Airlines has initiated a groundbreaking partnership with Twelve, a company focused on clean energy, to incorporate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into their flight operations. This collaboration is set to supply United with 260 million gallons of SAF over the next 14 years, aiming to significantly reduce aviation emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional jet fuel. Twelve’s facility, known as AirPlant One, located in Washington, is expected to become operational this year, marking a key step in this agreement.

The project benefits from the financial backing of the Sustainable Flight Fund, which has successfully raised over $200 million. Twelve’s innovative Opus technology transforms carbon dioxide and water into fuel, with the potential to produce other materials and fuel types. This advancement not only targets pollution reduction in aviation but could extend benefits to various other industries.

This initiative highlights United Airlines’ aggressive pursuit of carbon neutrality by mid-century, leveraging partnerships like this to bring cleaner fuel options to the mainstream. As the aviation sector continues to search for environmentally-friendly solutions, collaborations such as this between United and Twelve are expected to become increasingly common, setting new benchmarks in sustainable travel and fuel usage.
