India Launches First CBG Plant for Sustainable Energy Expansion

India’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Kaithal, Haryana, has begun commercial biogas supplies using a multi-distribution model. Developed by Demeter Agro Energies with CEID Consultants and supported by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), this facility offers an innovative approach to renewable energy. The plant has a capacity of 10 tonnes per day (TPD) of CBG and produces 25,000 cubic meters of raw biogas daily. The current supply includes 4 TPD of CBG through an MDPE pipeline network and features bottling capabilities using cylinder cascades. This operation utilizes feedstock such as pressmud and spent wash to produce 50 TPD of fermented organic manure, benefiting agricultural practices.

Key aspects of the facility focus on compliance with technical and safety standards, achieving a gas purity rate of 97.54% and striving for over 99%. Comprehensive safety measures ensure proper management of pressure, gas quality, and integration into the city gas distribution (CGD) network. Plans are underway to install India’s first CBG-specific steel pipeline injection system, setting a benchmark for exemplary design and safety standards. These initiatives support the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’s objectives alongside the Swachh Bharat Mission, contributing to clean energy and waste-to-wealth efforts. This advancement signifies a transformative step for India’s sustainable energy journey.
