China Ensures New Hydropower Project Poses No Threat to Downstream Nations

January 8, 2025

China recently announced the construction of a hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, which has sparked concerns from India regarding potential ecological damage and adverse impacts on water rights. Addressing these concerns, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, emphasized that the project has undergone comprehensive scientific assessments. These evaluations have been meticulously conducted to ensure that the construction and operation of the project do not harm the ecological environment, geological stability, or water rights of the downstream nations.

Guo highlighted that instead of posing risks, the hydropower project is expected to bring significant benefits to the region, particularly in disaster prevention and climate change adaptation. By mitigating potential hazards and ensuring stability, the project is designed to contribute positively to the downstream countries. This reassurance aims to address India’s worries, underscoring that China’s careful planning and thorough evaluations prioritize environmental sustainability and regional safety. The overarching message from China is clear: the hydropower project will be a boon for the region, fostering ecological and geological resilience while promoting cooperation and mutual benefits among the neighboring nations.
