What Does Oman’s First Wind Turbine Plant Mean for Renewable Energy?

Oman has begun developing its first wind turbine manufacturing plant in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm. The $200 million project, led by Mawarid Turbine Company, aims to start commercial operations in 2026. Turbines with 6.25MW and 9.6MW ratings will be produced, boasting an annual production capacity of up to 1GW. Approximately 1080 jobs will be created supporting wind power projects, aligning with Oman’s strategy to boost renewable energy capabilities.

The project includes key partnerships, such as technology licensing and knowledge transfer agreements with Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group. A memorandum of understanding with OQ Group focuses on establishing the plant. Additionally, a cooperation memorandum aims to train 350 job seekers for technical roles in the renewable energy sector. The factory will become the region’s first hub for wind turbine manufacturing, enhancing Oman’s clean energy infrastructure.

This initiative reflects Oman’s commitment to localizing renewable energy technology. By advancing its clean energy goals, the project marks a significant step forward in Oman’s renewable energy journey. The development underscores the nation’s dedication to enhancing its renewable energy landscape and creating new job opportunities in the sector.
