Sustainable Solar Energy Powers Bars in Las Dunas de Corralejo Park

August 13, 2024

Recent advancements in renewable energy have found their way into the idyllic setting of Las Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park in the northern part of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. This progress comes in the form of two newly completed solar installations aimed at powering local bars and restaurants within the park, ensuring they operate sustainably. These ambitious installations were made possible through a collaboration between Sharp Energy Solutions Europe and Solarland, a company with a strong reputation in solar energy implementation. The completion of these projects marks a significant milestone in the park’s journey toward relying exclusively on eco-friendly energy sources.

A striking demonstration of the marriage between technology and nature, these solar installations provide a combined power output of 29.70 kW. To complement the power generation, they also include a storage capacity totaling 80.4 kWh using Cegasa batteries. The goal behind these installations is to drastically reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, thereby cutting down carbon emissions and pushing forward the agenda for renewable energy use in this protected area. The journey to this achievement was anything but straightforward; the project encountered several logistical hurdles that required innovative solutions to overcome.

Overcoming Logistical Challenges

Eco-friendly ventures often come with their unique set of logistical challenges, especially in sensitive natural environments. The sandy terrain of Las Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park posed a substantial challenge for the transportation of materials and installation of solar panels. Transporting the components from the nearest roadway to the installation sites over a distance of more than 150 meters required the use of specialized vehicles. These vehicles were essential in navigating the coarse sands without disrupting the park’s delicate ecosystem. Despite these challenging conditions, the project team managed to stay on schedule, completing the installation within just three days, between January 2 and January 5, 2024.

Completing the project on time despite the harsh conditions is a testament to the meticulous planning and execution by the teams from Sharp Energy Solutions Europe and Solarland. This achievement not only demonstrates their capacity to manage complex projects but also highlights their commitment to sustainable development. The newly installed solar panels have seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape, serving as a symbol of how renewable energy solutions can coexist harmoniously with nature. Furthermore, this venture has resulted in notable operational cost reductions for local businesses, proving that eco-friendly solutions can be economically beneficial.

Technological Excellence and Public Reception

The technological backbone of these installations features Sharp’s NBJD 550Wp high-efficiency bifacial solar modules. Known for their exceptional reliability and performance, these solar panels played a critical role in the project’s success. Utilizing bifacial technology allows for the capture of sunlight from both sides of the panel, maximizing energy production. This high-efficiency technology proves that opting for renewable energy does not entail sacrificing performance. Instead, it showcases the potential for innovative technologies to facilitate a transition to sustainable energy sources.

Public reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors and local residents alike appreciating the efforts to maintain the park’s pristine environment while promoting renewable energy. By adopting solar energy, these bars and restaurants can continue to serve patrons in a manner that aligns with global environmental preservation goals. This has resulted in an increased sense of environmental stewardship among the community and visitors, furthering the park’s image as a leader in sustainability. The successful implementation of this project has made it a model for similar initiatives in other protected and remote areas around the world.
