In early 2025, Taiwan’s renewable energy landscape achieved a significant milestone with the Yunlin offshore wind project reaching full operational status. The ambitious project, developed by Skyborn Renewables and supported by Yunneng Wind Power, encompasses 80 wind turbine generators with a capacity of 640 MW. Annually, the wind farm is expected to produce roughly 2,400 GWh, enough to meet the electricity needs of over 600,000 Taiwanese homes. This considerable output also promises to reduce the region’s carbon footprint by offsetting approximately 1.2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.
The Yunlin wind park is strategically positioned in the Taiwan Strait, where strong and consistent winds create an ideal environment for generating wind power. Connecting to the Taiwanese power grid through onshore substations in Taixi and Sihu, Yunlin County, the generated electricity will be sold to the Taiwan Power Company under two 20-year power purchase agreements. This long-term commitment not only ensures a steady energy supply for consumers but also underlines the project’s sustainability and financial viability.
Skyborn spearheaded both the development and construction phases of the Yunlin project. The operational responsibilities fell on Yunneng—a joint venture involving Skyborn, TotalEnergies, EGCO Group, and Sojitz. As commercial operations kick off in June 2025, TotalEnergies will take over technical operations management, while Skyborn continues to provide other crucial management services. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of international partnerships in advancing large-scale renewable energy projects.
Taiwan’s ambitious goals for renewable energy receive a substantial boost from the Yunlin project, with the nation targeting 5.7 GW of offshore wind power by 2025.
