Energa-Operator Secures $1.8B to Modernize and Digitalize Poland’s Power Grid

February 25, 2025

In a substantial move towards enhancing Poland’s energy infrastructure, Energa-Operator has successfully secured $1.8 billion in funding aimed at modernizing and digitalizing the power grid in northern and central Poland, marking the largest initiative in the company’s history. This comprehensive project seeks to significantly improve the reliability and efficiency of the country’s power supply system, providing sustainable energy solutions that promise to not only enhance the security of supply but also reduce power costs for consumers. By addressing the urgent need for modernization and expansion, this ambitious undertaking involves the construction and upgrading of 21,000 kilometers of power lines.

Integration of Renewable Energy Sources

A key component of this massive project is the integration of 9GW of renewable energy sources, an essential step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels and stabilizing energy generation. The initiative also includes the incorporation of energy storage facilities, crucial for balancing the grid and ensuring steady energy supplies even from intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar. This strategic integration aims to expand the network capacity, allowing 200,000 new prosumers, who produce and consume energy, to connect to the grid, fostering a decentralized and resilient energy system valued at 40 billion zlotys through 2035.

Renewable energy integration is anticipated to foster significant advancements in Poland’s energy landscape, contributing to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and aligning with global sustainability goals. The project encompasses not only wind and solar power but also future-oriented energy storage solutions, mitigating the challenges posed by the variability of renewable energy production. As more renewable sources are brought online, the grid’s resilience will be enhanced, making it less susceptible to fluctuations and disruptions, thereby ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply for millions of consumers.

ORLEN Group’s Role and Investments

The ORLEN Group, which owns Energa-Operator, is at the forefront of this transformative project, driving significant investments to create a cleaner, more cost-effective energy ecosystem in Poland. This project forms part of the ORLEN Group’s broader strategy to support Poland’s economic development and accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy. The company is committed to the construction of four offshore wind farms, state-of-the-art energy storage facilities, and innovative gas-steam power plants in strategic locations such as Gdańsk and Grudziądz, critical for achieving the country’s energy transformation goals.

These investments are designed not only to enhance energy production capabilities but also to create a ripple effect throughout the economy, spurring job creation, technological innovation, and industrial growth. The focus on offshore wind farms and advanced energy storage systems highlights the ORLEN Group’s dedication to harnessing Poland’s natural resources while embracing cutting-edge technologies. This approach ensures long-term energy security and positions Poland as a leader in renewable energy adoption, thereby setting a precedent for sustainable development in the region.

Modernization Improvements and Customer Benefits

The modernization of Poland’s power grid will directly benefit 3.5 million customers by enhancing the system’s reliability and efficiency. With the upgrade and construction of 21,000 kilometers of power lines, the initiative aims to drastically reduce outages and improve the overall stability of the power supply. This includes the construction of 11,000 kilometers of new power lines and the modernization of 10,000 kilometers of existing infrastructure, coupled with the installation of advanced transformers and voltage control elements, critical for maintaining grid stability and efficient power distribution.

Consumers will enjoy lower energy costs as the reliance on fossil fuel diminishes, cutting down not only on fuel costs but also associated regulatory burdens. Furthermore, the improved grid infrastructure will support the widespread use of renewable energy, providing cleaner, more sustainable power solutions. The enhanced system reliability will substantially reduce the frequency and duration of power outages, providing a more stable and dependable energy supply. This, in turn, paves the way for sustainable economic growth and development across Poland, supporting industries and households alike.

Additional Program Goals and Economic Impact

The program also sets ambitious goals beyond mere infrastructure improvements, aiming to connect approximately 350,000 new electricity consumers and install 1,600 public vehicle charging stations. This expansion will significantly facilitate the growth of economic zones such as Pruszcz Gdański, Słupsk, and Koszalin, making these areas more attractive for investment and development. Additionally, the upgraded grid will support the development of vital infrastructure, including seaports, gas and fuel terminals, and the electrification of public transport systems, thereby boosting Poland’s overall competitiveness and economic resilience.

Currently, Energa-Operator’s network connects 9.6GW of renewable energy, a figure expected to rise to 19GW, while the number of prosumers is projected to grow from 300,000 to 500,000. The financing for this comprehensive modernization effort is sourced from various channels, including low-interest loans from BGK and preferential financing arrangements with the European Investment Bank. These financial supports underscore the project’s strategic importance and its alignment with both national and European energy policy objectives, reinforcing Poland’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Strengthening Energy Security and Future Considerations

In a significant move to boost Poland’s energy infrastructure, Energa-Operator has successfully secured $1.8 billion in funding to modernize and digitalize the power grid in northern and central Poland. This marks the largest project in the company’s history. The goal of this extensive initiative is to greatly enhance the reliability and efficiency of the nation’s power supply, offering sustainable energy solutions that aim to not only improve supply security but also lower electricity costs for consumers. Addressing the urgent demand for modernization and expansion, this major endeavor will involve the construction and upgrading of 21,000 kilometers of power lines. Energa-Operator’s project is pivotal in transitioning to a more robust and cost-effective power grid, ensuring that the energy infrastructure can meet future demands. By modernizing the grid, the project will contribute to both immediate and long-term improvements in energy distribution across the region.
