In an ambitious move toward sustainability, ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corp., a Canadian company based in Montreal, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop up to 15 modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities across North America over the next five years. This partnership aims to provide a clean fuel source for current hydrogen users and heavy industrial processes, notably steelmaking, which traditionally relies on gray hydrogen produced from fossil fuels like natural gas.

Charbone’s first site in Sorel-Tracy, near Montreal, Québec, will be powered by hydroelectricity from the Hydro-Québec grid by mid-2025. Serving as a template for future projects, this strategic partnership with ABB aims to standardize systems and components to enhance energy efficiency and reliability across the portfolio. ABB’s involvement in this venture is significant as the company will handle the design, engineering, fabrication, testing, and supply of electrical substations, also known as eHouses, to connect production facilities to local utilities.

This collaboration may extend to overall automation, electrification, and telecom functions based on project needs. By combining ABB’s advanced technology and engineering capabilities with Charbone’s vision of a green hydrogen future, the partnership looks to create a robust and sustainable ecosystem for hydrogen production. Furthermore, the incorporation of ABB’s Extended Operator Workplace (EOW) system in green hydrogen production plants aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime through continuous monitoring, thus ensuring a seamless production process.

The selection of the Sorel-Tracy site is not just a strategic choice but a symbolic one. Its successful implementation will be proof-of-concept that will pave the way for similar projects in the future, including the next planned facility in the Detroit area, a hub for the automotive industry. The MoU signifies a broader ambition. The Quebec government’s localized Green Hydrogen and Bioenergy Strategy supports this collaboration. This extensive strategy aims to reduce petroleum consumption by nearly a billion liters annually by 2030, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions by four megatons of carbon dioxide per year. The environmental benefits of this endeavor are profound, with outcomes equating to removing 1.2 million gasoline-powered vehicles from the road, showcasing the substantial impact green hydrogen production could have on climate change mitigation.
