North Macedonia Advances Smart Grids with EBRD Support for Renewables

December 26, 2024

The Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources of North Macedonia has embarked on an ambitious project to develop smart electricity grids with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This strategic initiative is aimed at bolstering the integration of renewable energy sources while addressing pertinent grid challenges. North Macedonia has set a target to incorporate 1.7 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030. As part of this endeavor, a comprehensive Grid Development Study will be conducted to update the 10-year Grid Development Plan and formulate a robust investment strategy. This strategy will be designed to ensure a seamless transition for both transmission and distribution networks, capitalizing on international best practices, particularly those from the European Union, to implement cutting-edge smart grid solutions.

MEPSO, the Electricity Transmission System Operator of Macedonia, under the leadership of Director Burim Latifi, is at the forefront of this modernization drive. Latifi emphasized the overarching goal of creating a secure, reliable, and future-ready energy system. This monumental task will involve significant infrastructure upgrades, including the development of new transformer stations, enhancements to transmission capacities, and advancements in monitoring systems. Minister Sanja Božinovska further underscored the ministry’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable energy transformation, reiterating the importance of this project in paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.

Ultimately, the project highlights North Macedonia’s strategic steps towards the integration of renewable energy sources, the modernization of energy infrastructure, and the adoption of sustainable energy solutions. The intended outcome is a reliable, future-ready energy grid capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving energy landscape, thus marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector development. This forward-thinking approach not only aligns with global energy trends but also promises to contribute to a more sustainable and greener future for North Macedonia.
