How Will TotalEnergies’ $750M Nigeria Gas Project Impact LNG Supply?

December 16, 2024

TotalEnergies’ recent announcement of a $750 million investment in Nigeria’s gas sector signals a significant step towards bolstering the global supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). With the Ima project set to commence in 2024, this initiative comes on the heels of the company’s $500 million investment in the Ubeta onshore gas field, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). These investments are situated within the broader context of Nigeria’s OML 58 onshore license and are designed to enhance the country’s gas production capabilities substantially.

The Ubeta project, which features a six-well cluster linked to existing facilities via an 11km pipeline, serves as a precursor to the larger Ima project. TotalEnergies’ strategic focus on expanding Nigeria’s natural gas sector aims to attract $10 billion in deep-water gas exploration investments. This ambitious plan is part of the company’s efforts to reverse production declines and leverage Nigeria’s considerable natural gas reserves to meet the rising global LNG demand. As the Senior Vice President for Africa at TotalEnergies, Mike Sangster has underscored the importance of these investments in addressing both local and international energy needs.

Regulatory reforms introduced by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu have played a crucial role in fostering a favorable investment climate. These reforms, which include tax incentives, have not only encouraged TotalEnergies to renew its focus on Nigeria but have also set the stage for significant growth and modernization in the country’s gas industry. TotalEnergies’ commitment to local partnerships underpins this strategy, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable energy development. The evolving energy policies in Nigeria highlight the nation’s dedication to leveraging its natural resources for economic and infrastructural advancement.

The impact of TotalEnergies’ investments on global LNG supply cannot be overstated. By boosting LNG production capabilities in Nigeria, the company aims to provide a more stable and diverse supply of natural gas to the global market. This is particularly significant in light of increasing global demand for cleaner energy sources. The successful implementation of the Ima and Ubeta projects will not only reinforce Nigeria’s position as a key player in the global energy landscape but also contribute to the broader objective of achieving energy security and sustainability.
