Worldwide Coal Plant Development Falls Sharply in 2017

A new report indicates the amount of new coal power capacity either planned or under construction has fallen significantly.

Approximately 273 GW of coal power are now under construction as of January 2017, according to a study by the Sierra Club, Greanpeace and CoalSwarm, as reported by Reuters. That represents a 19 percent drop from the amount under construction one year earlier.

The amount of coal capacity in the pre-construction planning stage fell even more sharply from 1,090 GW in January 2016 to 570 GW this year. Projects on hold grew from 230 GW last year to 607 GW now.
