Questionable Tariffs Leave A Dark Cloud Over The U.S. Solar Sector

Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported solar panels are stifling progress. But those prices have fallen so far and so fast that the damage has been dulled. The economic uncertainty, nonetheless, remains a huge pall hovering over the solar sector.

Roughly $8 billion worth of utility-scale solar projects — those that connect to the transmission grid — have been killed or delayed, says the Solar Energy Industry Association and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables, in a new paper that looks at the impact of solar panel tariffs on imports through 2022. The same analysis says that 9,000 jobs will have been lost or forsaken as a result of the president’s tariffs that were implemented in January.
