In the European Union, no discussion of energy issues these days comes without a discussion about climate change. The bloc’s energy policy must now be in line with its climate objectives – something reflected in the new organization of the bloc’s executive by incoming president Ursula von der Leyen.
In the outgoing commission of Jean-Claude Juncker, the climate commissioner served under a vice-president for energy. Now, that has been turned on its head. Kadri Simson, the new energy commissioner, will serve under Frans Timmermans, the vice president for climate.
