The Energy Transition: What is Needed to Achieve Clean Energy Goals

Though experts project a record-breaking percentage of U.S. power to come from renewables this year, interconnection timelines remain a barrier to achieving the nation’s clean energy goals. Currently, only 13% of solar, wind, and energy storage projects in approval queues have signed interconnection agreements, and in the past decade, only about 23% of all projects in interconnection queues have successfully connected to the grid and begun operating. What’s worse, the typical duration from interconnection request to interconnection agreement has increased sharply since 2015, exceeding three years in 2021. As a result, the U.S. currently has about 1,400 GW of energy generation and storage capacity seeking connection to the grid.
