Ursula von der Leyen spent her first day as the European Union’s new president delivering bold promises at the opening of a U.N. climate summit in Madrid, and said the rest of the world should follow Europe’s lead.
Von der Leyen was sworn in as the new European Commission president, taking over from Jean-Claude Juncker, at a ceremony in Brussels on Sunday. She then flew immediately to Madrid to speak at the opening of the COP25 summit, which was hastily reorganized in Madrid following a cancellation by Chile.
