Most Solar Modules Imported to United States Come from Asia

Two-thirds of the 13 GW of solar photovoltaic module imports to the United States in 2016 came from Asia, with Malaysia contributing the most imports, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The total grew significantly from 2015, during which less than 10 GW of modules were imported. Additionally, China accounted for the largest share of imports in 2015, but fell well behind Malaysia the next year. The EIA indicated companies in China and Taiwan outsourced their production to other companies, including Malaysia, after the U.S. International Trade Commission imposed tariffs on solar modules from those countries in 2014.
