Topline: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Thursday it seized a foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, driving up oil prices and further escalating regional tensions, especially following two tanker attacks occurring off the country’s coast since May and a cessation of diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran.
- The tanker, captured Sunday off the island of Larak, was said by the Revolutionary Guard to be transporting over 1 million liters of smuggled fuel. Just two weeks ago, British forces captured an Iranian tanker off the coast of Gibralter, and reported they chased away Iranian vessels attempting to capture one of their tankers in retaliation.
