With winter weather making a cold and blustery return to Michigan, Consumers Energy is encouraging residents with space heaters to use them safely.
“Space heaters can provide extra comfort during cold weather, but can also be dangerous and cause fires if used improperly,” said Aaron Kantor, director of emergency management and public safety for Consumers Energy. “We want residents to protect themselves and their families by taking simple safety precautions.”
According to 2009-2013 averages provided by the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters accounted for two of every five home heating fires, and four of five of home heating fire deaths in the United States.
