69% U.K. Emissions Drop Nice, But Global Renewables Investment Down: Reports

The intensity of greenhouse gas emissions from British energy production has dropped more than two thirds, but the country is still the second worst emissions culprit in Europe, a new report has found. At the same time, a global think tank warned that overall global renewables investment is down—and falling far short of levels needed to achieve international climate goals.

Figures from the U.K. Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the emissions intensity of U.K. energy suppliers dropped 69% from 1990 to 2018, putting Britain among Europe’s best performing countries on energy efficiency. But a report from the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) found that work to mitigate climate change through a transition to low-carbon energy is lagging behind, and must be accelerated across the board to come close to achieving the non-binding goals of the Paris Agreement.
