There are four types of electric car plugs in North America. Each plug is compatible with different electric vehicles as well as capable of providing a certain amount of power. Just like how the iPhone has one plug and Android phones have another, the same goes for electric vehicles.
Knowing which plug your EV can accept is critically important — not all charging stations provide all the different types of electric car plugs. That said, Tesla recently started co-locating some of its charging stations for more optionality. And, sometimes, you can find charging stations with multiple charging options available on-site. Shell Recharge stations offer different charging options — much like you’d get different fuel options at the same gas pump.
