Work starts on Darlington Unit 1 nuclear refurbishment

February 15, 2022

Work has started on Darlington Nuclear Generating Station’s Unit 1, the third of four nuclear reactors at the site to undergo mid-life refurbishment.

Start of work means that Ontario Power Generation has passed the midway point in its 10-year, C$12.8 billion ($10.04 billion) project, which will enable Darlington to produce energy for an additional 30 years, if not longer. Project execution began in October of 2016.

The first nuclear refurbishment unit, Unit 2, returned to service in June 2020. After a delay related to the COVID-19 pandemic, work on Unit 3 began in September 2020 and is under way. The Unit 1 refurbishment means that two nuclear units are being refurbished at once.
