Critics decry radioactive leak at New York nuclear power plant

A leak of radioactive material into the groundwater below a nuclear power station in New York City’s suburbs highlights a chronic problem with the nation’s atomic plants, some watchdogs said.

New testing has shown that the amount of tritium in the groundwater below the Indian Point power plant in Buchanan, New York, is about 740 times the amount allowed in drinking water, though officials said there was no public health risk from the leak.
