Air pollution is deadlier than anything else in the world, and Indian air pollution is notoriously bad. Nine of the ten cities with the world’s most polluted air are in India. This is according to the World Health Organization (WHO) assessment of PM2.5, or particulate matter so tiny that the particles can only be detected using an electron microscope. This stuff is the dust, ash and spray we breathe in on a daily basis, which over the long term is cutting 1.8 years off the life of the average person. That figure rises to 11 years of life expectancy lost in India.
