The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management reports that, “By the end of 2015, the U.S. Department of the Interior awarded 11 commercial leases for offshore wind development that could support a total of 14.6 gigawatts of capacity.”
Offshore wind power has the potential to contribute to clean, affordable and safe energy in coastal states and beyond. Realizing the potential of offshore wind power in the U.S. will require community, government agency and regulatory support, as well as a deeper understanding of offshore wind technology, benefits and costs.
