BP’s annual Statistical Review of World Energy indicated global coal consumption fell by 53 million tons of oil equivalent, or 1.7 percent from the year before.
Coal’s share of global energy consumption fell to 28.1 percent, the lowest share since 2004.
Declines were greatest in the United States with an 8.8 percent drop, China with a 1.6 percent drop and the UK with a 52.5 percent drop.
Additionally, coal production fell by 6.2 percent, or 231 MTOE, the largest drop on record. U.S. production fell by 19 percent, while China’s production fell 7.9 percent.
